Fingerprints are required for the PERC card. The PERC is the license that nearly all Illinois Security Officers need. Fingerprint requirements are specific and must be completed by Illinois licensed vendors.

You must get fingerprinted by an Illinois-licensed fingerprint vendor authorized by the IDFPR. You may need to schedule an appointment and bring a valid government-issued photo ID. There is a fee for fingerprinting services. You will receive a receipt with a Transaction Control Number (TCN), which you will need for your PERC application.

Purpose of Fingerprinting:
The primary reason for fingerprinting is to conduct thorough state and federal background checks before one may receive their PERC. By capturing your unique fingerprints and submitting them to the Illinois State Police (ISP) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the IDFPR can verify your identity and ensure you don’t have any criminal history that would disqualify you from working as a security officer.
How and Where to Get Fingerprinted:
- Use an Approved Vendor: You cannot just go to any fingerprinting service. The IDFPR requires you to use a fingerprint vendor licensed by the state of Illinois. You can find a list of these approved vendors on the IDFPR website. Many of these vendors offer electronic “Live Scan” fingerprinting, which is a digital and more efficient method than traditional ink and roll.
- Scheduling an Appointment: Some vendors may accept appointments others may operate on a walk-in basis. It’s always a good idea to check the vendor’s website or call them to confirm their hours and whether an appointment is necessary.
- What to Bring: When you go for your fingerprinting, you must bring a valid, government-issued photo identification. This could be your driver’s license, state ID card, passport, or military ID. You will also need to be prepared to pay the fingerprinting fee, which can vary between vendors (typically around $50-$70).
- The Fingerprinting Process: A trained fingerprint technician will take your fingerprints electronically using a Live Scan device.
- Transaction Control Number (TCN): After your fingerprints are taken, the vendor will provide you with a receipt. Crucially, this receipt will contain a 16-character Transaction Control Number (TCN). You absolutely must keep this receipt, as you will need the TCN when you complete your PERC application with the IDFPR. This number links your fingerprint record to your application.
What Happens After Fingerprinting:
The licensed fingerprint vendor will electronically transmit your fingerprint data to the Illinois State Police. The ISP then conducts a criminal history background check, which includes checking against FBI and other databases. The results of this background check are sent directly to the IDFPR.
Checking Your Fingerprint Status:
The IDFPR website often has a portal where you can check the status of your fingerprints. You will typically need to enter your last name, first initial, and social security number to access this information. Your fingerprint status needs to show as “Eligible” before your PERC application can be fully processed.
Important Reminders:
- Do not send your fingerprint receipt or any fingerprint-related documents directly to the IDFPR with your application. The information is transmitted electronically by the vendor. You only need the TCN from the receipt for your online application.
- Keep your fingerprint receipt in a safe place until you receive your PERC card. The IDFPR may request it if there are any issues with your fingerprinting process.
